A night light is darkness's sight

Tonight is the first night in years I've had to sleep with a nighty light. Why is that? I mean, I stopped believing in monsters under the bed once I realized the monsters are inside of us. (How cliché, I know.)

Why is it so comforting to have a low watt bulb lit in the corner of your room, only enhancing the depth of the shadows on the wall?

It's because we're afraid of our thoughts. We can't seem to get out of our own heads, and snap back to reality.

Our imagination tends to grab us by the throat and spin us around till there's one more breath left in our lungs, then loosens its grip for us to pump oxygen back into what is rightfully ours.

Why do we stay awake at night reminiscing? Can we decide when this happens?

Why tonight?
Why when I was 9?
Why three days ago?
Why ever?

  1. Going 4 the gold with these posts. It's true how our minds run a thousand miles an hour sometimes when the lights are off.
